RMDF Conducts in-house Training For Newsrooms In Best Practice Models

The Rwenzori Media Development Foundation has launched in-house trainings for select community radio stations and print publications in good journalism and best practice models.

Targeting rural radio stations and newspapers, the trainings specifically serve to improve abilities among journalists to report accurately and professionally on public policy matters; strengthen radio stations editorial policies, professional and ethical conduct; enhance capacities of reporters, editors, program managers and producers to generate meaningful content relevant to their audiences.

Addressing staffers at Life fm, RMDF Executive Director Martin Kibaba noted “at RMDF we believe citizens need information they can trust to make important life decisions and hold their leaders and decision makers accountable.”

He added “In a time where trust in media is declining, it is important to support good, accurate journalism – content that is ethical, independent, critical, and of public interest and this is why we are here, to help you give your audiences such content”

As part of this project RMDF is donating digital sound recorders, cameras and press jackets for select newsrooms and individual journalists to help them do their jobs.

At Bamba FM, the RMDF team trained reporters in data journalism. The one-day training led by RMDF’s Caroline Magara also attracted reporters from UBC Radio and KODI newspaper. The training was meant to help journalists in visualizing their stories as well as using data to accomplish the three functions of the media – inform, educate and entertain.

"We are not stopping here. This is a continuous process and we are more than committed to improving your abilities in professional media practice, no matter how small our resource envelop is. We shall continue to conduct mentoring activities and various in-house trainings based on the different specific needs of all our community media institutions” Said Mrs. Magara.
